GEO 2026: How to Get Your Business Cited in AI Answers (ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews)

Search is moving from blue links to AI answers. Here is what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is, and how Indonesian businesses can stay visible.

For two decades, getting found online meant ranking on Google’s first page. In 2026, that is no longer the whole story. People increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — and Google itself answers directly through AI Overviews. When the answer appears above the links, the question becomes: is your business mentioned in that answer?

What GEO is

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can understand, trust, and cite it. Classic SEO optimizes to rank a page. GEO optimizes to be the source the AI quotes.

Why it matters now

AI-assistant usage in Indonesia is among the highest in the world, yet very few businesses have adapted their content for it. That gap is the opportunity: the brands that become AI-citable first will own the answer while competitors are still chasing blue links.

How to start

  • Answer real questions directly. Lead with a clear, self-contained answer, then expand. AI extracts concise, factual passages.
  • Add structure AI can parse. Headings, lists, FAQs, and schema markup (Organization, FAQ, Article) make your content machine-readable.
  • Build entity trust (E-E-A-T). Consistent name, address, and citations across the web tell AI who you are and why to trust you.
  • Keep SEO as the foundation. AI engines still lean on the same crawlable, fast, well-linked content that ranks on Google.

GEO does not replace SEO — it extends it. Get the fundamentals right, add structure and trust signals, and your business stays visible no matter how people search.
